A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind to themselves. Amelia Earhart — Reams have been written on the empowering acts of kindness, gratitude, forgiveness, and the list goes on and on…. This true story struck me, as it relates so closely to a movie titled, “Playing it forward”. How the baton of life is passed forward on any act of goodness…

If you have not watched the movie, I would recommend you pull together your family or some friends one Saturday afternoon and over snacks and juice, watch this empowering movie…

The story at hand…….

A few years ago, a lady, Hilde Back, from Europe, felt the desire to help a needy child in Africa. She did look at numerous possibilities; on how to help, in what manner and where she could best utilise her contribution …

A young student, Chris Mburu from Kenya was selected… She thought nothing of this gesture and certainly never expected to hear from this young student. Interesting enough, years later she did hear from him. Chris had moved on from that little mud-walled primary classroom, to study at Harvard and he became a Human Rights Lawyer for United Nations.

It plagued Chris to go find that lady, who had provided for his initial step up in Life, and after many years of searching, Chris did eventually find Hilde.

Chris was so inspired by her generosity, that he started a scholarship program of his own and named it after his former benefactor…with the hope of ensuring that one small act of kindness would flow onto the hands of many…..

Each of us in our own communities could kick start such small acts….. For the price of a burger, a newborn baby’s life could be saved, for the price of a reasonable meal at a restaurant, a child could be educated. These small acts cause a shift in poverty standards….. “When the poor are able to get jobs and fend for themselves,, they forge their own paths out of poverty”, thereby creating a new nation with different dimensions.

Sending out Love. David
